Epson ABW Epson's Advanced Black & White mode (ABW) is available only with the following printers: Epson Stylus Photo R2400; Epson Stylus Photo R2880; Epson Stylus Pro 3800-3880; Epson Stylus Pro 4800-4880; Epson Stylus Pro 7800-7880; Epson Stylus Pro 7900; Epson Stylus Pro 9800-9880; Epson Stylus Pro 9900; and the Epson Stylus Pro 11880. This proprietary Epson screening technology was developed specifically for black and white printing and produces truly consistent images with no color crossover or color casts. One can produce gallery quality neutral and toned black and white prints from a single Ultrachrome ink set, or toned warm, cool, sepia or any blend in-between.

Printing monochromatic images with ABW is superior to RGB printing because the maximum black produced by the ABW mode is darker than the black produced by the RGB/Color mode. Additionally, yellow ink is used only in very small quanitites, which results in nearly absent metamerism and better long-term print stabililty (yellow is the least archival of the Ultrachrome inks).

Please note that standard RGB ICC profiles will not work in conjunction with Epson ABW (Custom Epson ABW profiles are grayscale), and without a custom ABW profile, color management and print density is left to the Epson ABW driver (you get what you get!).
